Today in the northern hemisphere it is the Winter Solstice.
In many cultures, the Winter Solstice is a time celebrated with family gatherings and feasting, as we celebrate the shortest day of the year and the knowledge that the days get longer and presumably better once we’re past this nadir. There’s a Chinese saying that translates to “Winter is bigger than Year” meaning that the Winter Solstice is more important than the Lunar New Year. When I was young, it was much more important to my family that we get together for the Winter Solstice even more so than the New Year.
Just remember that in the winter, the Earth’s tilt relative to the sun has sunlight travelling through more air and scattering more blue light. This leaves sunlight outside generally warmer, or yellower/redder, versus the case in the summer when the light appears whiter/bluer and brighter. So if you’re looking at reflective print (or food) under the sun (if you see it) on this day, be aware that the lighting is different, and hence the color will be different.
Of course, you could always use a standard light booth and then the illumination will be the same no matter the time of year.
But it’s the Winter Solstice – what on Earth are you doing hunched over a light booth when you should be home with your family???
I wish everyone a peaceful and enjoyable winter season.
